Baba Buddha Ji was born in 1506 AD in a humble family, yet his life elevated him to become a pillar of Sikh history. Born in the village of Kathu Nangal in Amritsar district, he was raised in the loving care of his father, Bhai Suggha Ji, and mother, Mata Gora Ji. Mata Gora Ji hailed from the Sandhu family of the village Mandara, located in the Ajnala Tehsil, whose cultural and religious influence deeply shaped Baba Buddha Ji’s life.
Even as a child, Baba Buddha Ji’s intelligence and spiritual inclination set him apart. When he was just 13 years old, he had his first meeting with Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. It is said that during this encounter, Baba Buddha Ji’s profound words and deep thoughts caught Guru Ji’s attention. Observing his son’s mature demeanor, his father, Bhai Suggha Ji, remarked, “Guru Patshah, look at my son, speaking like an old wise man!” From that moment, he became known as ‘Buddha,’ a name that later turned into the famous ‘Baba Buddha Ji.’
Baba Buddha Ji’s unbreakable bond with Guru Nanak Dev Ji continued throughout his life. He dedicated his entire existence to serving the Guru and spreading the teachings of Sikhism. Known for his deep spirituality and humility, Baba Buddha Ji’s heart was fully devoted to Sikhism. He served five Gurus, from Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji to Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, and it was under his sacred hands that the Gurus were ceremoniously enthroned. This was his greatest achievement — to have been a witness to the spiritual succession of five Gurus.
Baba Buddha Ji’s marriage was also seen as a spiritual event, graced by the presence of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji and his wife, Mata Sulakhni Ji. During this ceremony, Guru Ji bestowed invaluable blessings upon Baba Buddha Ji’s family. When Baba Buddha Ji’s parents, Mata Gora Ji and Bhai Suggha Ji, passed away, Guru Nanak Dev Ji was present at their final rites, highlighting the profound connection between their family and the Guru’s house.
Baba Buddha Ji’s spirituality and depth of divine knowledge made him immortal. His dedication to service reached its peak when he continued to serve the Sikh faith and the Guru’s household until his last breath, at the remarkable age of 113 years. He was appointed as the first Head Granthi (priest) of the Darbar Sahib, further cementing his invaluable contribution to Sikh history.
Baba Buddha Ji’s life stands as an ideal example of service, humility, and devotion to the Guru. His life remains an eternal inspiration for followers of Sikhism. His name is inscribed in golden letters in Sikh history, and his spiritual journey teaches us that true devotion and dedication are the keys to finding the right path in life.
