राग सारंग महला ९ में श्री गुरु तेग बहादुर साहिब जी की वाणी
ੴ सतिगुरु प्रसादि ॥
रागु सारंग महला ९ ॥
हरि बिनु तेरो को न सहाई ॥
कां की मात पिता सुत बनिता को काहू को भाई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
धनु धरनी अरु संपति सगरी जो मानिओ अपनाई ॥
तन छूटै कछु संगि न चालै कहा ताहि लपटाई ॥१॥
दीन दइआल सदा दुख भंजन ता सिउ रुचि न बढाई ॥
नानक कहत जगत सभ मिथिआ जिउ सुपना रैनाई ॥२॥१॥

भावार्थ-
(हे जिज्ञासु!) हरि के बिना तुम्हार कोई भी सहायक नहीं है। कौन किसी की माता, पिता, पुत्र और स्त्री है? और कौन किसी का भाई है?।१। रहाउ। धन, धरती/जायदाद और सब सम्पत्ति, जिस को अपनी मान कर बैठे हो, शरीर के ख़त्म होने के पश्चात कुछ भी साथ नहीं चलता, (फिर) इस से क्यों लिपट रहे हो।१। दीनों पर सदा दया करने वाले और दुःखों को नष्ट करने वाले (प्रभु से तुम ने रुचि को क्यों नहीं बढ़ाया? नानक का कथन है कि जगत सब झूठा है, जैसे रात का स्वप्न होता है।२।१।
O seeker, without the Lord there is no helper for you at all—who truly is anyone’s mother, father, son, or spouse, and who is anyone’s brother? (Pause) Wealth, land, and all possessions which you have taken to be your own do not accompany you after the body comes to an end, so why do you cling to them? Why have you not deepened your love for the Lord, who is ever compassionate to the humble and the destroyer of sorrow; says Nanak, the world is entirely false, like a dream seen in the night.
सारंग महला ९
कहा मन बिखिआ सिउ लपटाही ॥
या जग महि कोऊ रहनु न पावै इकि आवहि इकि जाही ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
कां को तनु धनु संपति कां की का सिउ नेहु लगाही ॥
जो दीसै सो सगल बिनासै जिउ बादर की छाही ॥१॥
तजि अभिमानु सरणि संतन गहु मुकति होहि छिन माही ॥
जन नानक भगवंत भजन बिनु सुख सुपनै भी नाही ॥२॥२॥
(श्री गुरु ग्रंथ साहिब जी, अंग क्रमांक १२३१)
भावार्थ-
हे मन! माया से क्यों लिपटे हुए हो? इस संसार में कोई भी (सदा के लिए) रह नहीं पाता। कई आते हैं, कई जाते हैं (अर्थात् जन्मते मरते रहते हैं)।१। रहाउ। किस का तन और धन है? किस की सम्पत्ति है? किस के साथ स्नेह लगाए बैठे हो। जो दृष्टमान है, वह सब नश्वर है, जैसे बादल की छाया (होती है) ।१। (हे मन!) अहंकार को त्याग कर संत-शरण ग्रहण करो, (इस से) क्षण भर में (मायावी बंधनों से) मुक्त हो जाओगे। दास नानक (का कथन है कि) प्रभु के भजन के बिना, स्वप्न में भी सुख प्राप्त नहीं होता ।२।२।
O mind, why are you clinging to Maya; in this world no one is allowed to remain forever, some come and some depart again and again. (Pause) Whose is this body and wealth, whose is this property, and with whom are you attaching your love; whatever is visible is entirely perishable, like the shadow of a cloud. Abandon pride and take refuge in the saints, and in an instant you will be liberated from bondage; says servant Nanak, without the meditation of the Lord, there is no peace even in a dream.

कहा नर अपनो जनमु गवावै ॥
माइआ मदि बिखिआ रसि रचिओ राम सरनि नही आवै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
इहु संसारु सगल है सुपनो देखि कहा लोभावै ॥
जो उपजै सो सगल बिनासै रहनु न कोऊ पावै ॥१॥
मिथिआ तनु साचो करि मानिओ इह बिधि आपु बंधावै ॥
जन नानक सोऊ जनु मुकता राम भजन चितु लावै ॥२॥३॥

भावार्थ-
(हे भाई!) मनुष्य अपना (दुर्लभ) जन्म क्यों गंवा रहा है? (यह) माया के नशे में और विषयों के रस में लीन रहता है और प्रभु की शरण में नहीं आता।१। रहाउ। यह सब संसार स्वप्न के समान है, (इस को) देख कर क्यों लोभ में फंसते हो? जो पैदा होता है, वह सब कुछ नष्ट होता है, (यहां) कोई भी (सदा के लिए) रह नहीं सकता।१। नश्वर शरीर को (मनुष्य ने) स्थायी मान रखा है, इस तरह (वह अपने) आप को (सांसारिक बंधनों में बंधवाए रखता है। दास नानक (का कथन है कि) वही मनुष्य मुक्त है, (जो अपने) चित्त में प्रभु-भजन को बसाता है।२।३।
O brother, why does a human being waste this precious birth, remaining intoxicated with Maya and absorbed in the pleasures of the senses instead of seeking refuge in the Lord? (Pause) This entire world is like a dream—why do you become ensnared in greed upon seeing it; whatever is born is destined to perish, and no one can remain here forever. Taking the perishable body to be permanent, a person binds himself in worldly attachments; says servant Nanak, only that person is liberated who enshrines the meditation of the Lord within the heart.

मन करि कबहू न हरि गुन गाइओ ॥
“बिखिआसकत रहिओ निसि बासुर कीनो अपनो भाइओ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
गुर उपदेसु सुनिओ नहि काननि पर दारा लपटाइओ ॥
पर निंदा कारनि बहु धावत समझिओ नह समझाइओ ॥१॥
कहा कहउ मै अपुनी करनी जिह बिधि जनमु गवाइओ ॥
कहि नानक सभ अउगन मो महि राखि लेहु सरनाइओ ॥२॥४॥३॥१३॥१३९॥४॥१५६॥

भावार्थ-
(मैं ने) मन लगा कर कभी हरि की गुणस्तुति नहीं की। दिन रात विषयों में लीन रहा और स्वेच्छाचरण करता रहा। १ । रहाउ। (मैंने) कानों से गुरु का उपदेश नहीं सुना और पर-नारी से ही जुड़ा रहा। पर-निंदा के लिए दौड़ता रहा, समझाने पर भी न समझा।१। मैं अपने कर्माचार के सम्बंध में क्या बताऊं? जैसे कि मैंने मनुष्य जन्म को गंवा दिया है। नानक (का कथन है कि हे प्रभु!) मुझ में सब अवगुण ही हैं, (मुझे) अपनी शरण में रख लो ॥२॥४॥३॥१३॥१३९॥४॥१५६॥
I never applied my mind to singing the praises of the Lord; day and night I remained absorbed in sensual indulgences and followed my own will. (Pause) I did not listen to the Guru’s teaching with my ears and stayed entangled with another’s spouse; I kept running toward slander of others and failed to understand even when corrected. What can I say about the course of my actions—indeed, I have squandered this human birth; says Nanak, O Lord, I am filled only with faults, please keep me under Your protection and refuge.
