Captain Ishar Singh: A Saga of Valour
Captain Ishar Singh was born in the year 1895 in the Punjab province of British India. He embarked on his military journey by enlisting in the British Indian Army as a devoted Sepoy in the 28th Punjab Regiment. Ishar Singh swiftly earned respect within his regiment for his extraordinary bravery and unwavering dedication to duty.
His unparalleled act of valour unfolded on January 6, 1921, when his military unit was stationed at a place called Wana in North Waziristan (present-day Pakistan). A formidable enemy force launched a sudden assault on their position. During this unexpected and fierce attack, Sepoy Ishar Singh displayed remarkable courage and an innate capacity for leadership.
When his officers were grievously wounded and incapacitated, Ishar Singh immediately grasped the gravity of the situation, assumed command, and initiated a counter-offensive against the enemy by organizing his comrades. Disregarding the intense gunfire, he himself fearlessly charged at the enemy’s fronts multiple times, inflicting heavy casualties and compelling them to retreat. In this fierce engagement, Ishar Singh himself sustained numerous severe wounds, yet he steadfastly held his ground and continued to provide extraordinary inspiration to his soldiers.
As a consequence of his unique bravery, unwavering resolve, and skillful leadership, his platoon succeeded in thwarting the enemy’s powerful attack. For his exceptional heroism, he was posthumously honoured with the Victoria Cross (VC), the highest military decoration of the United Kingdom. This prestigious award is bestowed for the most conspicuous bravery, a daring or pre-eminent act of valour or self-sacrifice, in the presence of the enemy.
