Captain Ishar Singh: A Saga of Valour
Captain Ishar Singh was born in the year 1895 in the Punjab province of British India. He embarked on his military journey by enlisting in the British Indian Army as a devoted Sepoy in the 28th Punjab Regiment. Ishar Singh swiftly earned respect within his regiment for his extraordinary bravery and unwavering dedication to duty.
His unparalleled act of valour unfolded on January 6, 1921, when his military unit was stationed at a place called Wana in North Waziristan (present-day Pakistan). As a consequence of his unique bravery, unwavering resolve, and skillful leadership, his platoon succeeded in thwarting the enemy’s powerful attack. For his exceptional heroism, he was posthumously honoured with the Victoria Cross (VC), the highest military decoration of the United Kingdom. This prestigious award is bestowed for the most conspicuous bravery, a daring or pre-eminent act of valour or self-sacrifice, in the presence of the enemy.
